Snowshoeing Yosemite

Eric and I have been to Yosemite many times now. This year we even bought a season pass there. For all the times we’ve gone there, though, we have never enjoyed it in the winter. So I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to go to Yosemite in the winter and use that opportunity for Eric to try snowshoeing for the first time? Yay! Unfortunately this particular winter has been unseasonably dry, but we still managed.

We loaded up a bunch of snowshoes, grabbed Kyle and Krista, and drove off to Yosemite for the weekend. The first day we started with the breakfast buffet at the Ahwahnee. Eric and I had eaten the same meal with his parents over the summer, and it is excellent. We fueled up before the drive to Badger Pass and spent the day hiking to Dewey Point. The snow was thin in areas and slushy in others, but we just used the snowshoes as necessary and were glad to have them along. Dewey Point is a really gorgeous overlook directly across from El Capitan and I think it’s a great hike for anyone, not too strenuous.

After the hike we drove back down to the valley and saw a ton of people lining up for something. With a little research we figured out they were waiting to see the famous Yosemite Fire Falls. We just happened to be there at the right time of year with the right set of weather conditions at the right time of day to maybe catch it. It’s really just the sunset hitting a specific waterfall in such a way that the water looks like fire. Unfortunately since this year has had so little snow there really was no waterfall, but the effect on the rocks was pretty anyway. Just another reason to come back in the winter!

For our second day we planned to just stay in the valley and enjoy the beauty. We started with a little browsing in the Ansel Adams gallery/shop, and then decided to check out the Yosemite Falls. We wandered around the base of the lower falls for a while before heading over to Bridalveil. All the waterfalls are almost full at this time of year, especially when there’s snow. Finally we found a little trail along the valley floor following the creek and trailed that until it was time to go home.

I think Eric had a fun first snowshoeing experience, and Krista had a great first visit to Yosemite. We’re already planning our next trip back!
