This morning our ship was docked in Livorno, Italy. Our destinations for the day were to see Pisa and Florence. After a bit of a bus ride and a walk we got to see the leaning tower of pisa! We had about 45 minutes to hang around in the Field of Miracles and take all the silly pictures we wanted. So we did. It was wonderful, but 45 minutes is more than enough time to make yourself look like an idiot with the leaning tower.
After another bus ride and a long walk we entered Florence. There were a TON of cruise ships in port this day and Florence was beyond mobbed with tourists and cruisers. The sun and heat were not helping the crowds either. We had about 4 hours to tackle Florence all on our own, so we just jumped right in. We enjoyed walking the streets and taking pictures of all the famous buildings, and just being there in general. The main goals were to see the Ponte Vecchio, see the Fake David, see the Dumono, eat gelato, and go inside the Church of Santa Croce. All goals were accomplished along with a lunch of some pizza in a tiny cafe. We didn’t have the time or money to go inside any of the famous museums, but going inside the Church of Santa Croce was important to me, and less mobbed by tourists than the Duomo, Academia, or the Uffizi.
Inside the Church of Santa Croce are the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and many others. I don’t regret the choice to pay and spend the time in that church than try to rush through any one of the other art galleries and miss the whole city. Despite being overly hot and crowded we enjoyed Florence, but were ready to go at the end of our time.
