We hadn’t been hiking in a while and it seemed like maybe we should get used to it again before our upcoming trip. We picked a moderate hike that ascended about 2.5 miles and 1000 feet up to a point called Buzzard’s Roost, and then back down the same way. It was quite cold at the beginning as we were in the mountains and shaded by the redwoods, but as we came up out of the tree cover it got quite warm.
This hike was a lot of fun with a few technical spots and a great payoff at the top. Especially when nobody else is up there. Only problem with this one is that it originates at one of the most popular parks around. That means there is a high fee for parking and an insane number of people milling about the entrance. We had to park super far away and add another half mile onto our hike just to get to the trail head. But this particular trail is not nearly as popular so we enjoyed it once we got started.
During this hike we got to test out a bunch of new stuff. I was wearing a new shirt (though it is the same model I have in 3 different colors already! It’s a great shirt), new hiking pants, new boot socks, new packs for both of us, and Eric’s new camera. Everything proved very worthy on the test run and should hold up nicely on our big trip.
