Final Day in Peru

But the scratches feel so good!

Eric was still feeling kind of sick this morning. We went to the hotel’s breakfast buffet because it was already included, and because we really hadn’t had breakfast much in this country yet. Sadly Eric didn’t feel like he could stomach anything, but I had a great time there. They had a huge spread with many many fresh fruits, cold cereals, yogurts, scrambled eggs, tomato slices, ham and cheese platter, bacon, sausage, French toast, some… (more)

Back to Lima

This cat chose Eric's lap!

I was actually feeling pretty terrible by the time we actually went to sleep last night. I took some Tylenol and then did manage to sleep well all night. In the morning I felt decent. No more body aches. My stomach was hurting a bit, but I couldn’t tell if I was really really hungry or still kind of sick. We were mostly functional when we checked out and took a car to the airport…. (more)

From Colca Canyon to Arequipa

Having breakfast over a canyon

I slept really well during the night. The blankets on the bed were so incredibly warm I didn’t even know if it got cold over night. I think I slept for almost 12 hours. I was still dizzy when I woke up, but we made our way to the patio for breakfast around 8am. Everyone else who had stayed the night was long gone, starting their treks so they would beat the hot sun. The… (more)

Hike Into Colca Canyon

Our first view down into the canyon and the river

Our alarm went off at 2:30am for us to get checked out and ready to catch our bus to the canyon. We tried to sleep on the bus and were mostly successful, but it was far colder than we imagined it would be. The inside of the bus windows was a sheet of ice. I guess that’s what you get passing over 5,000 meters at 4am. We arrived in a few hours to the town… (more)

Sandboarding

Lookin good

Our guide, Kike, showed up about 20 minutes earlier than expected so we didn’t really get breakfast but that’s ok. We set out in a rattly land cruiser with absolutely no seat belts driving about an hour to a tiny sand hill to get a feel for what sandboarding is like. More accurately so Eric could. I took no part in this even though they offered repeatedly. I went for photo taking. Eric fell a… (more)

Bus to Arequipa

Placemat with the word for potato from all over the world

Alarm went off at 5:15 today to make sure we would be all packed and checked out of the hotel in time for our 6am bus pickup. The bus arrived right on time and we boarded for our 5 hour ride to Arequipa. This bus was just as big and nice as the last, but seemed to lack a heating system. They handed out blankets first thing which was thoughtful. We stopped at a view… (more)

Last Day at Lake Titikaka

Hello

This was our last super leisurely morning for a while. Slowly got up and ready to check out. The checkout seemed to be rather informal and unorganized. And our boat out wasn’t until 12 so we just left our bags in the lobby and decided to walk up the big hill on the island. Right at the gate to start the trail were a small herd of alpacas. We took their pictures and debated how… (more)

Full Day on Isla Suasi

Yellow flower

We slept until 10 which was fabulous. Although at about 10:15 someone came knocking at the door to see if we were okay. I guess in a place this small if you don’t show up for breakfast or either of the morning activities people take notice. We told them we were fine, just resting. We left the room around 11 and took a walk around some parts of the island. Saw more of the bunny… (more)

First Day on Lake Titikaka

View from lunch. This place was paradise at 13,000 ft.

Alarm went off at 6. And we were wishing we hadn’t agreed to this. But it is always worth the full days. A pleasant surprise was that our room stayed very warm all night. Between good blankets, the space heater, and keeping the door to the bathroom shut we were very comfortable all night and in the morning. ¬†We checked out and our car picked us up to take us to a boat on the… (more)

Bus to Puno

Sheep head

It was very difficult to wake up at 6am this morning. We were tired and sore from Machu Picchu yesterday. I don’t know why I can’t seem to take a relaxing vacation, but that is how it goes. We checked out and a car came at 6:30 to take us to where the Inka Express bus was waiting. There was some confusion about seats and reservations but everything worked out just fine. We set off… (more)

Machu Picchu

Peru-4156

Our alarms were set for 4:30am today so we would have time to check out and get in our 5:10am car to the Ollantaytambo train station so we could catch the 6:10 train to Aguas Calientes. That all went very smoothly and we were off on our 90 minute train ride from the sacred valley. We were sitting with a group of 3 young women from Sacramento traveling together and an older woman from Virginia… (more)

Surprise Day in Cusco

Relaxing on a bench

Originally on this day we were supposed to meet a local guide in our hotel at about 9am and go with him on an all day tour of the sacred valley. We had planned a customized private tour to go to the Maras, Moray, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo and end up in Urubamba for the night with a man named Oscar who had been recommended by many others online. Unfortunately, there were local protests planned and the… (more)
