Fennel!

holidays

Even though the title says Fennel! this post will be a hodgepodge of what I did all weekend. Some baking, some cooking, some experimenting, and lots of dishes. Let’s start with the fennel, though, because it’s my new found friend. Last post I mentioned I still didn’t know what to do with my fennel. The last fennel I had went into a soup and was entirely unnoticed. I finally decided to roast it and see… (more)

December Box

img_2943

Due to the holidays and my desire to only have a box once every 2 weeks, there will only be one box in December. It came to me last week! Woo! I finally remembered to take a picture of my box contents. Here is my latest box: 1lb baby bok choy 1 bulb of fennel 1 head of lettuce 1 bunch of red chard 1 bunch of carrots 5 mandarin oranges 3 fuji apples 2… (more)

Christmas Cookies

vertical

We had some really truly terrible rain this past weekend. It was like the opening to The Cat in the Hat in that Eric and I didn’t know what to do when we couldn’t go outside! The gray skies and horizontal rain were just beggin’ for some bakin’. Not bacon. And since we are now officially in the holiday season, I thought we should do some of those cute little spritz cookies everyone likes. The… (more)

Sunol Park

Baby cows literally standing in the middle of the trail

Our hike today was a little northeast from where we live, over in the foothills of the east bay. And today was a gorgeous, sunny, cool fall day. The hike was pretty short for us, only 3.5 miles, but it had some steep portions that slowed us down as well as beautiful views we stopped to look at. One of the highlights was the free range cows that seemed to be grazing everywhere. Every so… (more)

Squash!

Box day is my favorite day every two weeks! Quick recap on the previous box. The roasted, golden beets were kind of a flop. Eric thought they were potatoes and was disturbed when they did not taste like potatoes. I didn’t care much for them, either, and will stick to beets in salad form. I also just ended up eating the kiwis raw because I couldn’t think of anything creative to do with them. This… (more)

Kiwi Ideas

The box that came last week was pretty fun. We got: 3 pears 2 apples 4 Kiwis Carrots Garlic Lettuce Kale Golden beets The kale turned into kale chips that same night which I enjoyed, but Eric did not. He said they were no different than eating a dried leaf off the ground. Thanks. The carrots and fruit have been snackers all week, although I’m saving the kiwis for some special idea. Perhaps something for… (more)

Halloween 2012

Eric and our pumpkins

Even though Halloween 2012 hasn’t actually happened yet, I’m pretty sure most of our participation already has. Last Monday we went to a friend’s Halloween party where all the food was dressed up for the holiday. It was pretty cute. I took my vampire bitten cupcakes and spider cupcakes. Someone else had made stuffed peppers, but carved out Jack O’Lantern faces in the peppers. Things like that. This weekend we went on an easy, but… (more)

Busy Baker

spider-cupcakes

So since the last post we have tried our baby bok choy. I just briefly bathed in hot garlic oil and then steamed it for a minute or two. It was still bright green and tasted like garlic. Not a bad side dish even if it wouldn’t be our first pick. No pictures of that, unfortunately. I also mentioned that last weekend I wasn’t the only one baking! Eric got it in his head to… (more)

Radishes

Coated

In the most general news, I tried really hard to meal plan this week and only go to the grocery store once. So hard for me, but I hate going everyday. So the plan for tonight was to have baked chicken/tilapia, steamed broccoli, and roasted radishes. Yup, radishes that are not raw! Imagine that! I’m not a huge fan of radishes. I just don’t like their peppery nature. But they’re a root vegetable and they… (more)

Dark Chocolate Lemon Brownies

So apparently I’m not very good at keeping up with this blog thing. The beets from the last box were roasted and eaten in salads with goat cheese and walnuts exactly as planned. Eric did not like the beets so I ended up eating all 4 of them myself. They were pretty tiny though. All other contents of the box became snack items. Delicious! I also baked some brownies that went to Apple last weekend…. (more)

Henry Coe Hike

Starting the hike up

Last Saturday Eric and I decided to head out on a 7.8 mile hike (I don’t care that the GPS thinks it was 7.4). We set out early enough to arrive at the park and start our hike by 9am. That was quite the feat for me on a Saturday. Henry Coe State Park is only about an hour away, though, just south and east and up some seriously winding roads. It is the second… (more)

Pumpkin Ginger Cupcakes

Pumpkin Ginger Cupcakes

For the last couple weeks I have been baking regularly again. I used to bake fabulous cakes all the freakin’ time! I loved it so much, it is a favorite hobby of mine. Unfortunately it isn’t healthy for any one person, or couple in our case, to eat those types of things multiple times a week. I stopped baking because I didn’t want to eat it, and I didn’t want to waste it. What a… (more)
